A deep crimson Herat-Baluch carpet with three bold stepped medallions in navy and teal — the larger format allowing the tribal composition to develop its full spatial authority.
The Baluch carpet at this larger format is a different proposition from the small prayer rug that originally defined the tradition. The three bold stepped diamond medallions disposed vertically across the deep crimson field — each worked in deep navy and teal with ivory accents and a dense secondary fill of star forms, hooked diamonds, and stepped crosses — have room to breathe, to relate to each other, to develop the spatial rhythm that the smaller format can only suggest. The Baluch weavers of Herat have carried this expanded vocabulary for generations, moving between compact devotional pieces and ambitious room-scale compositions while maintaining the same tribal geometry and the same earthbound palette. Knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at approximately 110 knots per square inch. The field beyond the medallions is dense with secondary ornament — evidence of a tradition that does not believe in empty space.
