An extraordinary Herat Maliky kilim — its deep navy field carrying a full figurative hunting scene in coral, ivory, and gold — narrative flat-weave of exceptional ambition and rare technical accomplishment.
The flat-weave kilim has always been considered a geometric medium — the slit-woven tapestry technique most naturally producing angular, rectilinear pattern. Figuration, when it appears, represents something exceptional: a weaver willing to work against the formal tendencies of the structure to produce a narrative in wool. This kilim is exactly that. Across a deep navy field, a full hunting scene unfolds: mounted horsemen, leaping deer and gazelle, birds in flight, and stylised trees, rendered in vivid coral-pink, ivory, gold, and olive with a clarity of articulation that demands close inspection. The tradition of the hunt and the paradise garden runs deep in Islamic textile art — from the Safavid court carpets of sixteenth-century Persia to the nomadic kilims of Afghanistan — and it survives here in the hands of Turkmen weavers in Herat who have not abandoned the figurative strand of their heritage. Woven entirely in wool. A piece of genuine rarity.
A hand-woven rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand by nomadic tribesmen, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone — known as abrash — are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
