Chromolithographic oleograph depicting Menaka, the celestial apsara, with her daughter Shakuntala, drawn from Kalidasa’s Abhijnanashakuntalam. The composition presents an intimate maternal moment, with Menaka shown in a protective embrace as the young Shakuntala gazes upward, emphasising tenderness and emotional restraint rather than dramatic narrative action.
The figures are rendered with idealised naturalism and soft modelling characteristic of early 20th-century Indian oleographs produced within the visual tradition shaped by Raja Ravi Varma’s synthesis of European academic realism and Indian literary subject matter. Scenes from Shakuntalam, particularly those involving Menaka and Shakuntala, were among the most widely circulated literary subjects in Indian print culture following the popularity of Ravi Varma’s original compositions. This work represents a Bombay commercial adaptation of Ravi Varma’s celebrated Menaka–Shakuntala composition, produced for wider domestic circulation by independent publishers and presses. Such reproductions played a crucial role in disseminating classical literary imagery beyond elite audiences and into everyday Indian households. The surface is enriched with hand-applied bead and mica embellishments, accentuating drapery and jewellery and lending tactile luminosity to the image. The lower margin bears the printed registration “Registered No. 111”, along with the publisher’s imprint A. K. Joshi & Company, Bombay, and the printer’s credit Ravi Uday Press, Ghatkopar, Bombay. The work is presented in a decorative wooden frame, likely of the period. Condition: Visible water staining, surface wear, and losses to the printed surface, particularly along the lower margin. Some loss to decorative embellishments. Wear is consistent with age and prolonged devotional or domestic display. Overall composition remains legible and visually compelling.
