Ibrahim Sozani One-OF-A-Kind-Afghan Rug
MRP incl. of all taxes
A Herat Sozani flatweave of ivory ground with a dense allover geometric repeat in the central field and an elaborately layered border system — the Sozani tradition at its most structured and pattern-rich.
Where the Sozani flatweave in its sparser registers deploys its geometric-floral vocabulary with visible breathing room, this piece works at full coverage: the ivory central field is arranged in a dense allover repeat of small interlocking hook-form geometric units in periwinkle blue, crimson, and dark burgundy, the ground showing only as the narrow channel between connected devices. The composition is entirely geometric — no floral departure, no figurative element — and in the Sozani tradition, this represents the more strictly tribal register: the vocabulary of the woven surface at its most concentrated, before botanical influences arrived to open it up.
The border system is the most elaborate element: multiple successive bands working outward from the central field through different geometric registers — a herringbone vine in deep green, a running repeat of small cross and star devices in multicolour, a continuous hooked geometric band, a wide border with a key-form repeat in ivory and colour. Each band carries a different pattern but all contribute to a compositional layering that gives the piece a formal richness far exceeding the field alone. The outer elem panels at head and foot, in deeper red and charcoal horizontal stripes, provide the structured close. Woven in wool by Turkmen craftspeople in Herat.
A hand-woven rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each piece in this collection is made by hand, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone — known as abrash — are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
