There is a reason the Mushwani kilim is sought out by those who know Afghan flat-weave well: it does what no standard kilim can. By knotting a short pile directly onto selected motifs within the flat-weave ground — a technique unique to this Turkmen-descended tribe south of Herat — the Mushwani weaver creates a surface with physical depth, the principal diamond and geometric forms rising from the field in tactile relief. On a warm amber-honey ground, the lattice of elongated diamond devices in madder red, deep indigo, and ivory builds across the field with a rhythmic energy that rewards the hand as much as the eye. The palette — earthy, warm, approachable — sits naturally alongside wood, stone, and leather. Woven entirely in wool by Mushwani craftspeople in the Herat region.
