Tabriz has been one of the great weaving cities of the world since the Safavid shahs established their court there in the sixteenth century, and the textiles that come from the Tabriz region carry that history in their technical ambition. This soumak — woven by Turkmen craftspeople using the weft-wrapping technique that produces a surface richer and more textured than standard flat-weave — arranges its field in bold diagonal diamond compositions in jewel tones: deep crimson, royal blue, teal, gold, amber. The colours are saturated and unequivocal, the diagonal forms creating a dynamic surface energy quite different from the more static allover repeat of the companion Somak. The soumak technique adds a further dimension to the palette — the angle of the wrapped weft threads catching the light differently at different points, giving each colour a subtle internal variation. Woven entirely in wool.
