A Sarkhati is what happens when Turkmen weavers in Herat work at a pitch of attention that leaves almost nothing unresolved. This piece, twenty years old and beginning to carry that beautiful suggestion of age at its edges, is built around a warm terracotta field — copper and rust deepening toward brick at its centre — with a single large diamond medallion in ivory, outlined in dark espresso brown, floating at the heart of the composition.

Around it, scatter motifs fill the field with just enough detail to keep the eye moving. The border is dark and structured, a frame that knows its function. At 180 knots per square inch, wholly wool throughout, the pile has the satisfying density of a piece made without shortcuts. Two decades on, it is still working.
