The Turkmen kilim tradition of Herat does not believe in empty space. The deep crimson field of this large piece is organised around an elaborate amber and gold central medallion — its interior carrying a layered sequence of geometric devices of considerable formal complexity — and beyond the medallion, dense secondary fill motifs cover the field in a pattern vocabulary that draws on both the geometric and botanical traditions of Afghan textile production. The multicoloured decorative border bands — horizontal stripes in vivid sequential tones of teal, orange, ivory, and red — complete a composition in which every surface is active, every element placed with intention. This is weaving as accumulation: the result of a tradition that has spent centuries learning what a surface can hold. Woven entirely in wool by Turkmen craftspeople in Herat.
