A Botanical Illustration from 1600. Created around 1600 by Anselmus Boetius de Boodt, the illustration shows the plant in full bloom. Delicate blue flowers with five petals cluster at the top of the stalk. The green leaves are finely veined and serrated. The text on the illustration includes the Latin name of the plant alongside its names in Dutch and French. The Valerian plant is a member of the Caprifoliaceae family and is native to Europe and Asia. It has a long history of medicinal use and was believed to be effective in treating a variety of ailments, including anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy.
