There is a Turkmen carpet format in which three large medallions are placed along the central axis of a red field — equidistant, symmetrical, each one a self-contained world — and the result is always more powerful than it sounds. This Khal Mohammadi from Mazar-e-Sharif works in that format with full conviction: a deep crimson ground, three diamond-shaped medallions in navy outlined in ivory, each carrying a ram's horn scroll at its centre — the ancient symbol of protection in nomadic Turkmen culture.

The field between the medallions is quietly worked with geometric forms. The border is structured and authoritative. Wool on cotton, hand-knotted at 110 knots per square inch. A carpet with a clear point of view.
