In the finest Afghan kilim production, the border is not an afterthought. In the Herat Turkmen tradition, it is a compositional element of equal standing to the field — a zone where the full range of the weaver's dye vocabulary is deployed in concentrated sequence, successive bands of geometric devices moving through the spectrum of natural dye production: teal, orange, madder red, ivory, amber, each band self-contained yet contributing to a border of extraordinary decorative richness. Here, that border frames a generous ivory field where large central medallion devices in crimson, navy, and amber are given room to declare themselves without crowding. Woven entirely in wool by Turkmen craftspeople in Herat. At this larger format, with this level of border ambition, the piece carries a room with considerable authority.
