There is a compositional confidence to the Herat Turkmen kilim that comes from a tradition absolutely certain of its own vocabulary. The large central ivory medallion of this piece — set against a deep crimson field, its interior structured with star, cross, and angular diamond devices in navy and amber — does not negotiate with the eye; it simply dominates. The contrast between the saturated red ground and the luminous ivory medallion is the whole composition, and the Turkmen weavers of Herat have known since long before it became a principle of modern design that this pairing, made in hand-spun wool and natural dye, works with a directness that few other arrangements achieve.
