A Herat-Baluch carpet of near-monochromatic deep claret — power achieved entirely through tone, not colour contrast — woven with the quiet confidence of a tradition that needs nothing to prove itself.
The Baluch palette is not always about contrast. This carpet — its deep claret field arranged in an allover repeat of cross and rosette devices in tones only marginally darker than the ground — achieves its effect through a subtlety that demands closer looking before it reveals itself. There is no ivory medallion, no amber accent, no bold departure from the red. The geometry is there, resolved in the near-monochromatic dark, and the ivory diamond devices at the border and the natural cream fringe at head and foot are the only concession to relief. The Baluch weavers of Herat have practised this kind of compositional restraint alongside the more immediately legible pieces of the tradition — it represents the more considered, more demanding strand of the same vocabulary. Knotted entirely in wool at approximately 110 knots per square inch.
A hand-knotted rug is an investment piece. With proper care it will last a lifetime and become a cherished heirloom. Each knot in this collection is tied by hand by nomadic tribesmen, making every piece entirely one of a kind.
Variations in colour and tone — known as abrash — are a hallmark of authentic handmade rugs, particularly tribal and vintage pieces. Wear and age only add to their beauty.
