Mint and celadon and the very pale blue of a clear sky just after dawn — the Chobi weavers of Kabul occasionally produce a piece in a colour that has no name in the trade, only in experience. This is one. The field is a soft, luminous blue-green, and across it moves a vine scroll carrying blooms in amber, red, ivory and soft gold, the whole composition open and unhurried.

The border is warm and well-considered — a deeper tone that prevents the lightness of the field from dissolving. At 6.2 × 4.2 feet, hand-knotted by Hazara weavers in Kabul at 110 knots per square inch, this is a carpet for a room that someone loves.
