This painting is part of a distinct group of naturalistic artworks created in the Mughal style at the Mewar court in Udaipur, Rajasthan, during the early 18th century, under the reign of Maharana Sangram Singh (r. 1710–34). Notably, this piece commemorates a hunt from the mid-17th century, portraying an equestrian rider believed to be Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor (r. 1628–58). This deviation from contemporary events reflects a trend in 18th-century Rajput courts, where artists drew inspiration from earlier Mughal works present in princely collections. The scene unfolds with Shah Jahan on horseback entering from the upper left, accompanied by huntsmen in hunting green attire. They stalk a herd of deer, accompanied by trained cheetahs, set against a backdrop of rocky hillocks and foliage. The depiction captures the dynamic essence of the hunt, portraying both the strategic prowess of the hunters and the scattered response of the prey, creating a rich narrative within the Mughal artistic tradition.
