This print is part of the first album with drawings by Flemish humanist and naturalist Anselmus de Boodt of four-legged friends dating between 1596 -1610. The drawings of animals, birds and plants, was commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II. Hunting was a favorite hobby at Rudolf II's court, and hunting dogs were an important part of the Emperor's household. The typical posture of these hunting dogs is well observed and aptly depicted. His brown, glossy coat has been skillfully painted by applying shades of brown and white highlights with just the tip of a brush. These are printed on a fine quality ivory paper and are reproductions of old illustrations & in most cases will have the same imperfections as the original.
